Statement of Jessica Arbour, regarding verdict in the Bill Cosby trial

Jessica Arbour

“Today’s verdict is a victory for survivors of sexual trauma that speaks to the power of Andrea Constand’s persistence and strength.  It also speaks to the critically important role that civil lawsuits can play in getting justice for sexual assault survivors. In 2005, law enforcement closed Ms. Constand’s case due to a lack of evidence, but because she refused to give up her pursuit of the truth and accountability, she took the step of filing a civil lawsuit against Mr. Cosby.  During his deposition in that civil case, Mr. Cosby admitted to engaging in sexual contact with her and also that he had obtained drugs to engage in sexual relations with unsuspecting women. Law enforcement then had enough information to reopen the investigation and charge him. Today, the jury sounded loud and clear that no one is above the law – not even America’s favorite TV dad – when it comes to rape and sexual assault.”
