Fr. Juan Bazalar

Diocese:  Archdiocese of New York

Notes:

Bazalar was indicted in December 1991 for sexually abusing a 15-year-old altar boy at St. Peter’s Church in Monticello, New York. Bazalar fled to Canada, where he prepared to travel to his native Peru. Bazalar was then arrested, jailed, and extradited to the United States. Bazalar was convicted in 1993 with the jury finding him guilty of sexual abuse. He was sentenced to 5-15 years in state prison.

In 1995, the conviction was overturned on appeal. Bazalar was found not guilty in a retrial after the prosecution’s key witness died. Bazalar reportedly returned to Peru to resume his career as a priest.
